How do you measure a countersink diameter?

I sectioned the part, and tried measuring from the axis of the hole to an edge, or vertex, but I am not actually getting the edge, and therefore not an accurate measurement.

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Here is a trick I have found:

I use Feature/History and pick on the face next to the countersink and write down the Z value. I then select the hole and write down the X and Y values of the hole. This gives me the position of a point in the center on the top face.

I then type these values in the Air Distance XYZ and define a vector IJK in the X direction (1, 0, 0)

Multiply the air distance by 2 and you have the diameter

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Instead of writing down the Z value, use Cntrl C + Cntrl V to copy & paste from the X-Caliper menu.

If many countersinks are to be measured, try creating a Coordinate System with a suitable name (e.g. XCal_csink) using the Orient, Circle option and digitize the first countersinked hole.

Then make "XCal-csink" active via

Right Hand mouse Activate Coordinate System > XCal_csink.

Now X-Caliper, Air Distance needs only "X0Y0Z0I1J0K0"

To measure subsequent countersinks, change the Coord System "XCal_csink" to the required hole centre,  and, with X-Caliper Air Distance still open, press Apply.

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

I put in an enhancement request for countersink measurement
in X-caliper back in 2000. Is there enough interest in the user
community to request this as an enhancement to in a future
Vericut release?

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Serge and Mike,

Thanks for the tips, but my csink is not going to be this easy to measure.  It is not done with the Z-axis.  It is inside a wheel, and done with a 90 degree angle head.  I'll have to check, but I'm not sure if any of them are aligned with the X-axis, either, but if so, I can probably use an adaptation of this method.

Joel,

I for one would like to see this enhancement.  I don't see why the "edge" or "vertex" can't pick the edge of the csink, and then you could measure to the axis of the hole, but I haven't had any success this way.

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Al,

1. In this case, Mike's method will work better. by creating a Coordinate System at the top of the csink with its Z axis pointing along the hole axis, X will be normal to the hole wall.

2. for "edge" we look for 2 planar surfaces to calculate a straight edge

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

OK,
I did get this to work, but it's a long road to get there.
Please add csink measure to X-Caliper.
Thanks

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Hi.

How is the idea. if we save the cut stock in igs and inport into cad( auto or solid works) , then measuring the counter sink . will it work. i don't have licence for exporting model , so i couldn't try.

cheers

Re: How do you measure a countersink diameter?

Hi ,

I just tired creating igs in solid works and importing it into solidworks again. it works smile .

You are able to measure all the features u want to. i wish i have export licence .

can some one try it in the vericut and put a post for the vericutter's

cheers
