Tooling function updates

1.  Priority Critical.  Cutters and holders need their own Tolerance value.  Independent of Model tolerance.   When importing tools from External sources, step files, profiles etc, the default model tolerance is too loose.   We have some cutter profiles that are so far out of tolerance they cause .004"/.1mm errors in cutting.  Tightening up the Model Tolerance to the .0001" inch causes problems with Vericut processing.   So when importing cutters we try to tell people to: change model tolerance, import cutters, then remember to change model tolerance back.      It is not working well.

2. Priority High.  The ability to define or redefine a tool component as a shank.   So it doesn't pick up the Holder collision data and cause bogus errors when cutting by a wall.   Needed when importing cutters defined from external sources.

Re: Tooling function updates

Hi Val,

1. Regarding "the default model tolerance is too loose"  We have people working on using a TDM system called Wintool. I do not have visibility of problems, but I appreciate the alert. I will pass that along.  I don't understand what could go wrong though......as 2D profiles are points, lines and Circles. The Canonical definition should be dead nuts.....I would think.

2. Yes!    Shanks must be Shanks.   What about all the extended flute end mills with 1.5 flute length, and 5 inch out of holder?   You are saying tools from External sources is buggering that up.   I wonder.... on the step side.... is there a container for the shank definition within the TDM or step?

Looks like I need to suggest an investigation, on our translation accuracy.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Tooling function updates

The problem is when  cutter profiles are defined from a profile inside a step file,  the profiles come in as point to point fits.  No arcs.  It is the arc areas in the cutter profile that have problems when point fit is based on the looser tolerance.

This may also effect cutters imported from step files and defined as inserts.

No slow down in Vericut if a cutter profile has 10 points vs 100.  The only problem we see is in measurement.   When a cutter has a radius and defined with points, you can't measure the radius left by the cutter.
