I am trying my hand at a 1st time build of a machine. 2 axis lathe with a tool turret & long boring bar holder 90 deg to turret, so whole assy will rotate depending on if you use the turret or B-bar. I would like to know what is the best way to procede & what to keep in mind when modeling the machine. I have solidworks for the modeling.
Start by modeling machine base with coordinate system at center of spindle, then all other machine component models (at home position, X+, Z+ from spindle) in relation to the machine base coordinate system, so that when I assy the models in Vericut the models are in the correct location from the start ?

So long as you use the same origin for all your models, and make them the correct distance from that origin in solid works, then they should import into Vericut in the same position. I have found that to be a huge help when building/modifying my machines.

Thanks Mike I will approach it like that. Another question can you mix & match metric with imperial ?. I want to borrow and or add parts from other sample files to do a few other machine builds. Is this possible ?

Yes, I believe you can. I think what happens is when the model is imported into Vericut the scale stays the same, but the reported dimensions are expressed in whatever units you chose to set the job up in. For example if you have a table that"s 10 inches wide, and you bring it into a job set up as metric, the width will be reported as 254 mm, although the size relative to other models should stay the same.
