Difference between Vericut .ply and .stl format

Hi everyone. I am a new user of Vericut.
I recently been asked to do an evaluation of Vericut polygon .ply format.

Basically I want to evaluate on the difference between .ply and .stl format in terms of their tessellation accuracy .i.e.
Do they have the same position of Vertices/Faces after the tessellation(from .iges-->.ply  VS .iges-->stl)?
And I would like to know whether are there any major difference between these 2 formats?

Hope you guys can enlightened me.

Thankyou for your kind attention.
