create tools quickly

I would like to be able to create a revolved profile for a tool, then modify dimensions of the tool so that I can quickly create say, a couple hundred different tools in a short amount of time. Any ideas?

Re: create tools quickly

Thanks for the reply Dave, that would be sweet if I had access to that. All I have at my diposal is Vericut and Mastercam X2. I should have posted that originally.

Re: create tools quickly

Create the base tool, get the definition from the tools library file and put it into a separate file.
Create a program in your preferred programming language and create a file containing all the tools based on the extracted template.
Merge the file into the tool library file.

Re: create tools quickly

stpendl is right, though you don't need a serious language to do it.
You could do it in Excel. Make a graphic of the tool you would like versions of and you could have VBA make a tool file in the background.
If you're using Version 5, it's a little easier since it's just a simple ascii file. Version 6 is similiar but it is now in xml format.
Send me a .tls file with tool and a graphic of the tool and I'll see if I can whip something up for you quickly. I have a spreadsheet where I go bang a another spreadsheet of tools and if the tool is found it adds it to a list.
I then take all the tools in the list and create a.tls file with the original tool name being replaced with 1,2,3 etc for a standard tool list.
You're just looking for the opposite. You want to take a standard .tls file and modify the values to create a new .tls file. I guessing you'd like more than one tool in the list, so thats slightly additional functionality, but nothing serious.
If you've found your own solution in the interim then just ignore this..

Re: create tools quickly

Smythe,
I have not found a solution to this. I have Excel/Access 2007 if that works. Let me know where to send it, and it will be on the way.

Re: create tools quickly

When I have complex cutter shapes I export a .dxf file and import it in the tool manager.  You can import the .dxf profile in the revolve profile option for either cutter or holder.  You may find it useful for cutters with a large number of features where you just want to modify a few key features and then export.

A word of caution... I found that having a large library with over a few hundred tools was very slow to work with.  You would be better off to have a dozen libraries to pull from, rather than one or two large ones.
