Re: ORIGIN

Tony,

You can define a coordinate system at the center of a hole or post.  Setup, Coord. System > Define..., Orient tab, use the pull down and select Circle, press the selection arrow and follow the prompts in the message area at the bottom of the main VERICUT window.  Once the coordinate system is defined you can use it to define Work Offsets, manipulate models, or use as a Toolpath Origin.

Re: ORIGIN

Hi Dave,
I have seen Ely using that to define coordinate system. He has used the model from .stl (stereolithography). I have tried to do similar thing from a polygon file. It does not work. I am not sure whether I was making a mistake or system did not work for polygon file.

Re: ORIGIN

Kantha,

The only time I have seen this fail with a polygon file is when the file was not accurate, this caused VERICUT to not be able to calculate the vectors needed to get the center of the hole or cylinder.  What kind of error message did you get?

Re: ORIGIN

Hi Dave,
I have tried the circle option to define the coordinate system with a polygon model (immediately after the user meet at Connecticut. some time in Oct 2004?). I have seen Ely demonstrating this in the user meet. I went back and tried with the polygon file. It allowed me to pick the XY plane and it did not pick the cylindrical face. This was in V5.3. Now we are on V5.4.1.

I pull the same file and try to define coordinate system using circle. It works. Of course, it takes like a minute after I pick the cyclindrical face to come up asking me to pick X edge.

The good news is it works even with polygon file. I am sorry that I wrote without trying in the newer version.

Thanks & Regards
Kanthavelan.

Re: ORIGIN

Hi Kantha,
I think I remember you bringing an example to VERICUT training class that showed this behavior. If memory serves me, you were going to send an example model to support@cgtech.com so we could test here, however, I don't recall receiving one. If you haven't done so, we still invite you to send a problem file so we can do some testing on our end.  --Gene

Re: ORIGIN

Hi Gene,
I tried to send the polygon file thru email. It is 40MB. It is not going. Do you have a ftp site for me to load the file?

Thanks & Regards
Kanthavelan.

Re: ORIGIN

Kantha, ZIP and upload your file to => ftp://ftp.cgtech.com/Upload
Then send an email to support@cgtech.com to advise what the file name is. Feel free to put in subject line: "File for Gene"

Re: ORIGIN

Kantha, Glad to hear that upgrading to a VERICUT version newer than 5.4 did the trick. 5.4.3 has the most recent updates for building CSYS, especially when working with STL/Polygon model files. --Gene

Gentlemen,
Great topic! This was a big help in aligning a cut stock with a fixture!
