SHARED MACHINE MODELS

Does any body know of a site that has machines already modeled?
Should there be such a place? (even if they are not 100%)
Any one else interested in this or trading machine models?

what do you think?

Re: SHARED MACHINE MODELS

Vericut has quite a few basic machines in their library.  In 6.0 there are a few detailed machines in the showroom directory.

It is a good idea, if we can get around a few things.

A problem using someone elses model is how they define -0-.
Example, a horizontal 4 axis mill.  May come from the factory with Full retract  Z being Z-0-, but in the plant it may be set to the table center.  Or a comp may offset it.

When defining a machine, the ORIGIN is often used to offset each piece.  All the numbers need to add up correctly else your program XYZ may not align.  I like to offset the blocks, not the axis, leving the axis origin definitions at 0,0,0.

Some people hard code a 0 on the machine, others want to "Comp" it in just like the shop.

There are various methods of offsetting the machine pieces.  Some are easier to modify than others.   One machine we copied had the X axis inverted and everything built from there.  Why?  from the operators perspective, X & Y were backwards.  It was a mess to modify.  We finally redefined it as a standard machine and made the default project file set the machine view to look from the backside of the machine. Much easier to maintain and debug.

The control is also dependent on the options you have.  They can be very complicated.

Many companies see these files as valuable and tend to trade or sell the information rather than give it away.   That is the biggest obstacle I have found.

Re: SHARED MACHINE MODELS

Still, it is a nice thought though. If someone had the basic machine you were after a swap might be a solution rather than build from scratch.

Perhaps a seperate Thread could be started if enough people are interested.

People could swap control files also , even if it's only to see how a particular function is set-up.

For example, Ive recently re-configured my control to read Angles contained in comments after a M71. (with the help of this Forum). If someone needed to see how I would gladly upload my control file.

Perhaps this could be opened up for further discussion.
