Looking for best settings for collision detection

We use Delcam Powermill for programming, and the default collision avoidance setting for our toolpaths are 1mm for the toolholder, and 0.05mm for the toolshank.
If the diameter of the toolshank is ie 6mm and the tool diameter is 4mm, I have to define the toolshank as a toolholder for the Vericut. I would like to check the real toolshank 'near miss' distance at least 0.5mm, but in this case the toolshank will go inside 'near miss' distance, and there will be lots off errors.
Any help would be appreciated.
